Many people see “sleeping” merely as a “down time” when their brains shut off and their body rests.  Most people tend to cut back on their sleep, thinking it won’t be a problem.  The fact is there’s more to sleeping than just shutting your brains off and resting your bodies.  Research reveals that a number of vital tasks are done during sleep that helps maintain good health and enable people to function at their best.  Without enough sleep, people fail to respond quickly and pay attention or focus.  It even cause mood problems and increases the risk of developing obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and infections.  It’s been said that the brain is working hard in forming the pathways necessary for learning and creating memories and new insights.  The brain stays active during sleep and each stage of sleep is linked to a distinct pattern of electrical activity known as brain waves that develop our learning, memory, and mood.

Why sleep is important

According to experts, sleep is necessary not only to form new learning and memory pathway in the brain but also the pathways to work up to speed.  People need less sleep as they get older has never been proven to be true.  It is a myth that deceives people.  In fact, adults need at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night to be well rested.  People spend less time in the deep, restful stage of sleep when they age because they are more easily awakened.  Lack of sleep causes thinking processes to slow down and can make you more easily confused which leads to faulty decision making and more risk-taking.  It also leads to greater risk of developing depression.  Bottom line is, lack of sleep can be dangerous.  So make sure you get your good night sleep daily. Stick to a sleep schedule.
